There is a great selection of traditional cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or meal. Fresh fish and sea food such as calamari, squid, shrimp, sea bream, swordfish and tuna are caught in small quantities and are specialities of Halki, though you should also try to sample some of the tasty local cuisine.

Locally produced honey is plentiful on the island of Halki and very reasonably priced.
Halki local foods
Ofto - paschal lamb stuffed with rice and kidneys baked in a traditional wood fire oven.
Koulia - hand made macaroni cut in the shape of pebbles.
Halkitiko - macaroni, hand made and cut finely and cooked after a few hours and served with fried onion etc.

A superb dish made of pasta, minced beef and onions and tomato paste, covered with a cheese and bechamel sauce and baked in the oven. Very filling and scrumptious!
Local dishes
Kakavia - dish made from fish, onions and potatoes - all boiled.
Koulouria - made with lentils and tomatoes.
Xevotigana - very sweet dessert of dough, sesame seeds and honey.
Halki was famous for its large delicious figs as well as the numerous flocks of partridge, which even today bring many hunters to the island every year.
