The dryness of Halki, is ideal for various lizards and you may spot some on walls or in rock gardens.
Flowers & Fauna
For most of the year, 90% of the island of Halki is bare, barren and rocky. However, during the early months of the year and after the winter rains, grass and many wild flowers are seen peeping through the rocks. Huge bushes of rhododendron and also herbs such as sage and thyme grow.
Back to Nature
Cars are very limited on the island of Halki and therefore the donkey is still of great use, especially around the steep, cobbled streets on the one settlement of Nimborio.
Cats
As is usual in Greece, the island of Halki, the 'cutie' cats are still to be found liberally, especially around the harbour area awaiting the fisherman's remains of the catch.
Goats
The island of Halki houses around 6000 goats! The animals avoid eating the wild oregano and white marjoram, but leave the locals to pick them.
