When visiting the island of Halki, take the opportunity for some long but rewarding walks and discover some of the more than 360 country chapels, the remnants of a medieval castle, and Chorio, the island's ancient capital, which lies at the foot of the castle. Now deserted, the ancient village still holds memories of past events within its walls. Also worthwhile are visits to the monasteries of Stavros, and Taxiarchis Michail of Panormitis, as well as to the Panaghia Megalochari, an ancient church with frescoes of inestimable value.
Chorio
The ruins of the old village of Chorio, now deserted, provide a fine opportunity for a quiet walk and for the most wonderful view of the sea, blending into the clear blue sky.
Walks
Don't miss visiting the Pefkias, half an hour north of the port, where the sanctuary of Apollo once stood. The valley ends in a minuscule beach. For a taste of the island's agricultural past, visit the Koila Plateau. Traditional architecture enthusiasts will find this site very interesting, since the abandoned peasants' shelters they will see here, the "kyfes", are of very unusual construction, characteristic of the Dodecanese. This is an intriguing place anyway, on this plateau you will truly feel you have travelled back in time.
